Expectations
Respect everyone in class. Students are responsible for all aspects of the class. Students may need to remain after school (or lunch) for exams, labs, prelabs, & test / HW review sessions. Students are strongly urged to take the AP Chemistry exam. Students are strongly urged to take the AP Physics C exams; sign up for access to ap classroom (information about how to sign-up & student guide) / test registration / test fee info; password = 3MGKWP or A7YZ7Z Follow all laboratory safety rules. |
This class will prepare you for the AP Chemistry exam (on Friday morning, May 7). This is a demanding course that is equivalent to a first-year college-level course for science majors. You may earn college credit and UC awards an extra "grade point" for this course. Due to the culumative nature of chemistry, strongly recommend getting chem tutoring as soon as any problem arises and form a study group (password = 94109G). course pedagogy = "flipped classroom" basis / rationale; e.g. broad persepctive (Khan); math (Treisman); high school chemistry (Bergman & Sands); high school math (Exeter); college chemistry (Laude); UT reform); medical school (harvard) excellent preparation for college chemistry, a “gate keeper “ (1, 2) course, required in STEM majors. for non-STEM majors, prepare for college; (1) ; compare HS vs college (1); college grad rate (1) Textbook: Chemistry; Brown et al. (online; but different edition) supplement: openstax online textbook; district adopted textbook (click on link; different edition ?); college board review video webinars; Khan academy videos prerequisites: chemistry (or consent of instructor) & advanced algebra; recommend calculus. |
A = | 90 - 100 % | exam = | 80 % | |
B = | 80 - 89.9 | lab = | 10 % | |
C = | 70 - 79.9 | CW / HW = | 10 % | |
D = | 50 - 69.9 | |||
F = | < 50 |
the semester grade and grading period grades are based on the above components and cumulative from the beginning of the semester; thus the semester grade may not be the average of your grading period grades. upon student request, semester grade adjustment based on College Boad ap chemistry exam score: 5 = A both semesters; 4 = A one semester; 3 = B one semester; get a grade change form from the counseling office, copy of the course syllabus, & your report card before the end of the 2 nd week of school in the subsequent fall semester. potential spring semester project. extra credit points: academic integrity (e.g. 1; potential consequence; e.g. 1; 2): Cheating on an exam or plagiarism (e.g. lack of appropriate quote marks / citation in a lab assignment; as such, inlcude in-text citation and a reference list at the end of the lab assignment) is unacceptable; potential consequences (teacher discretion): (i) score = 0 (default), (ii) negative score, (iii) lower semester grade by 1 level, and (iv) semester grade = F. include your name(s) & period on all turned-in material; otherwise, no points. Based on the benefits of group work in school and the work place up to three students may work in a group for their

class work / home work
Any exceptions to the policy in the syllabus will require a note (stating your name & description of the situation & item number in the grade book) signed by me. Fill-out survey & signature form. |
