Description of course

 

This is a college-preparatory course, where UC awards an extra "grade point" for this course. Excellent preparation for college chemistry,  a “gate keeper “ (1, 2, 3) course,  required in STEM majors. for non-STEM majors, prepare for the rigor of college. Due to the culumative nature of chemistry, strongly recommend forming a study group (password = 94109G) for chem tutoring.

prerequisite: algebra I (B or higher); recommend: (i) concurrent enrollment in advanced algebra and (ii) students with a D or F in fall honors chem to enroll in spring ngss chem rather than spring honors chem.

Grades

  A = 90 - 100 % exam = 50 %
  B = 80 - 89 class work / home work = 30
  C = 65 - 79 lab = 20
  D = 50 - 64    
  F = < 50    
 

semester- and grading period- grades are cumulative from the beginning of the semester, thus the semester grade may not be the average of your grading period grades. 

extra credit points: earn up to two extra credit points per semester for using Mathematica for your lab report.

academic integrity (example; potential consequence; e.g. 1): Cheating on an exam or plagiarism (lack of appropriate quote marks / citation (e.g. in-text citation and a reference list; inlcude url for websites) in a lab assignment; potential consequences (teacher discretion):  (i) score = 0 (default, which can't be dropped), (ii) negative points, (iii) lower semester grade by 1 level, and (iv) semester grade = F.

include your name(s) & period on all turned-in material; otherwise, no points.

Based on the benefits of group work, up to two students may work in a group for their prelab and / or lab report and / or HW assignments (excludes test / quiz).

late work (i.e. homework, prelab, or lab report) due to an absence is due on the day of your return to class and write "absent" on it and write the score on any HW assignments; otherwise, no points.

exams

  • score = 0 for being absent on day of exam / quiz
  • weekly quiz on Monday (Tuesday if Monday = holiday); may use 1- page / 1- side notes
  • may use a calculator, periodic table  for exam; may write notes on this paper.  may use photocopy of textbook appendices, but no notes may be written on it.
  • may include recent lab and / or integrate prior related chemistry content
  • test correction; do corrections on another sheet and attach in front of original; due before school starts on the next school day; score = average of test correction & original test.
  • retest (teacher discretion); record highest score
  • Final exam is cumulative & multiple choice format

class work / home work

  • include HW score on HW:  2 points for trying each problem, 1 point for trying part of a problem, 0 point for no attempt on a problem; any multiple-part problem is still worth 2 points. write your HW score at the top of the assignment; otherwise, your score = 0.
  • bring your textbook to class on the day of HW collection.

labs

  • turn-in prelab assignments & lab reports at the beginning of class
  • prelab due on the day of the lab; lab report due date on course website
  • no make-up labs, but can get lab data from a classmate and to avoid plagirism, cite data source & state absence
  • read lab notebook rubric / scoresheet and lab safety rules; sign & attach to the end of your lab notebook; otherewise, no lab notebook points
  • to prepare your lab report, use Word (include equation editor) & Excel as appropriate
  • lost of prelab / lab report points for improper sequence of content

Any exceptions to the policy in the syllabus will require a note (stating your name & description of the situation) signed by me.
